There are so many problems with Disney live-action remakes, and I think that the Mulan movie encapsulates that perfectly. The first batch of Disney live-action remakes were basically copies of the original movies, with a couple of minor changes and added songs here and there. Even though movies like Cinderella (2015) and Beauty and the Beast (2017) made a lot of money, critics argues that Disney was just regurgitating all of their old stuff and struggling to be creative. I think those critics were totally right! Having some background information about Belle's late mother and her childhood in Paris did not enhance the original story told in the animated movie. I don't really care that Cinderella knew the Prince before the ball in the remake of Cinderella. I don't think they needed to remake the movie to amend that detail, especially when Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella exists.
While audiences showed up for remakes that were mostly loyal to the source material, they couldn't care less about remakes that really tried to change the story, like Dumbo (2019) and Mulan (2020). I do think that a lot of people love Mulan because of the music and the way it fits into a Disney Renaissance formula. Nobody really cared about Dumbo that much, and I doubt that most people even know how much new stuff was added to the remake.
I think that Disney tried to have their cake and eat it too regarding adding new things and maintaining the old source material with Snow White (2025). They wanted it to be modern, but they saw how much backlash there was to Disney remakes that changed too much stuff to try and be more "woke." The Little Mermaid was the last actually successful Disney Live Action remake in my opinion, and I really doubt that the adaptation of Tangled is going to do great, unless they do exactly what they did in the early days of the Disney live-action remake. Even if they do, I wouldn't be surprised if audiences were just sick of the same stuff getting regurgitated. But maybe they're not! After all, we've been rewatching Disney movies since they came out.
